Morgan Thermal Ceramics Superwool® High Temperature Felt and Millboard Ideal for Industrial Appliances

Morgan Thermal Ceramics announces the availability of its Superwool® HT™ Felt and Superwool® HT™ Millboard, ideal for fabricating gaskets and heat shields for industrial appliances, including ovens, fryers and cooking equipment. The lightweight, multi-purpose products are available in a full range of sizes, thicknesses and densities and offer equivalent performance to traditional refractory ceramic fiber (RCF) insulation in many applications.

As global regulatory restrictions on RCF are being tightened, many manufacturers of industrial appliances around the world are seeking to move towards insulation alternatives. Superwool® fiber has been developed to provide the improved high temperature characteristics required to act as an alternative to RCF. Rigorous testing has established that Superwool® fiber products feature low bio-persistence and felt and millboard made from Superwool® fiber are fully exonerated from any carcinogenic classification under nota Q of directive 97/69 EC issued by the European Union. They are not restricted by European REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances) regulations.

Superwool® HT™ Felt, a multi-purpose lightweight insulating felt, is made from Superwool® HT™ fibers, the only low bio-persistent fiber available with a classification temperature of 2,372°F (1,300°C). The fibers are held together with an organic binder that makes it particularly suitable for die-cutting operations. Semi rigid, Superwool® HT™ Felt is neither brittle nor dusty. As a low bio-persistent product, it can be installed without the use of the higher level of personal protective equipment required for installation of RCF insulation. Superwool® HT™ Felt can be used to replace traditional RCF based felts in high temperature industrial applications such as expansion joints in kilns, furnaces, and boiler walls and high-temperature gaskets.

Superwool® HT™ Millboard is a rigid composite board made from Superwool® fibers, a variety of refractory fillers, organic and inorganic binders. Good thermal shock resistance allows its use in applications where large variations in temperature occur. The board has a low heat storage capacity and can be used in direct contact with flame. It also features high temperature stability and low thermal conductivity. In addition to its low bio-persistence, Superwool® HT™ Millboard has good handling strength, and is easy to cut with standard tools.

Unlike the majority of high temperature insulation boards that are typically half-inch or thicker, Superwool® HT™ Millboard comes in sizes ranging from 1/16--inch to 3/8-inch, offering a lighter weight solution for high temperature gasket insulation or as an insulator in a heat shield. These thin boards are suitable for applications with temperature ranges all the way up to 2,600°F (1,427°C).

In addition to its uses for industrial cooking equipment, Superwool® HT™ Felt and Superwool® HT™ Millboard are also being used as insulation for sheet steel processing equipment, in other industrial kilns, furnaces, boiler walls and water heaters, as well as in diffusion furnaces used in making silicon wafers for the electronics industry.
