REACH Process
What is the REACH process?
REACH places greater responsibility on industry to identify and manage the risks posed by chemicals to human health and the environment, under this new legislation both manufacturers/ importers and downstream users have obligations to communicate uses and risks up and down the supply chain.
The first step in this process was pre-registration, this ran from 1st June 2008 until 30th November 2008 and allowed manufacturers/ importers of substances already on the market within the EU to submit a pre-registration, this pre-registration allows the companies to continue to supply after 1st June 2008 and benefit from extended deadlines for registration dossier submission. The deadlines for submission vary according to tonnage manufactured/imported and also the hazard classification for the substance as detailed in the diagram below.

Following on from successful pre-registration Morgan Thermal Ceramics are now continuing onto the next step in the REACH process, production and submission of the registration dossiers for substances that were pre-registered. This involves collating available test data, use information and exposure data where necessary, and taking part in various SIEF (substances information exchange forum) for the preparation of the joint registration dossiers for our substances.
Downstream users will be invited to take part in this process by informing Thermal Ceramics of their uses, to make this as efficient as possible Morgan Thermal Ceramics are currently part of the ECFIA working group producing a list of uses based on the use descriptor system from RIP 3.2, Guidance on producing CSA/CSR. These lists will be used in the registration dossiers for RCF (Kaowool, Cerachem and Cerachrome), AES (Superwool) and PCW (Maftec) products.
Once this list is finalised Morgan Thermal Ceramics will be communicating with all our customers to ensure that their uses are covered by these lists. The finalised list will be sent out and published on the website by December 2009, if you have a use that you feel is not covered under the uses list you will be given the opportunity to discuss the possibility of inclusion into the registration dossier for submission before the relevant deadline.
For those substances classified as dangerous these uses will be used as the basis for the exposure scenarios in the Chemical Safety Report.
